Ball Roll
The essential foundation of dribbling mastery, keeping the ball close and defenders guessing.
The Ball Roll is a foundational skill move within the EA Sports FC universe, serving as the primary method for players to manipulate the ball's position relative to their avatar without breaking stride. It acts as the essential building block for more complex dribbling combinations, allowing virtual athletes to shield possession, create separation from defenders, and set up subsequent feints or cuts.

Lore & Background
Throughout the franchise's history, the Ball Roll has remained a constant, evolving from simple directional movement into a dynamic component of combo chains. It is the silent guardian of possession in tight spaces, enabling virtual strikers to navigate crowded penalty areas and midfielders to evade pressuring opponents. Without this fundamental technique, the fluidity that defines modern gameplay would be impossible, making it the first skill every aspiring virtual manager teaches their squad.
In Their Own Story
The stadium lights hummed as the defender closed in, his avatar shoulder-checking for a foul. In the split second before contact, the striker didn't panic; instead, he flicked the right stick left. The ball rolled smoothly across his foot, shifting instantly to his outside edge. The defender lunged at empty space, tripping over air as the striker pivoted, using that simple roll to create a sliver of room for a lethal shot.
Reader's Guide
To execute a Ball Roll, hold the right stick in the desired direction while running or standing still. This keeps the ball close to your player's feet, making it harder for defenders to intercept. It is most effective when used to shield the ball against pressure or to change direction quickly without losing momentum. Tactically, advanced players use the Ball Roll as a setup move rather than a finish. Rolling the ball backward can lure an aggressive defender forward before switching to a forward roll and sprinting past them. Combining it with feints creates unpredictable movement patterns that confuse AI and human opponents alike. In Ultimate Team, this skill is available on every player card regardless of rating or rarity. However, players with high Dribbling stats will execute the move faster and maintain better control during collisions. While Icons and Heroes do not have exclusive access to this basic move, their superior attribute ratings make the execution significantly more reliable in high-pressure situations.
Did You Know?
- The Ball Roll is one of the few skill moves that can be performed while a player is standing completely still.
- Mastering directional ball rolls is often considered the first step toward unlocking complex combo chains like the Cruyff Turn or Elastico.
- Defenders cannot easily tackle a player performing a well-timed backward Ball Roll because it disrupts their predicted interception path.
